Homeowners in Mount Vernon, NY who want to remove tub and install shower in the same space are changing a bathtub or tub-shower combination into a stand-alone shower. The work covers demolition, plumbing changes, waterproofing, and the new shower itself, so it is more than a simple fixture swap.
What the Project Involves
Demolition comes first. The tub is cut or lifted out, the surround and any damaged materials are removed, and debris is hauled away. The tub drain is then reworked, because a tub drain sits in a different position from most shower drains, and the shower valve may be moved or replaced. Old tubs, especially cast iron ones, are heavy, so removal often takes more labor than people expect.
Once the plumbing is set, the shower floor and walls are built and waterproofed, and the finish surface goes in, whether prefabricated panels or tile. Installers also check the subfloor for soft spots or water damage, which are far easier to repair while the area is open.
When This Option Makes Sense
- You want a full replacement rather than a surface-level update.
- The existing tub or surround is cracked, stained, or leaking.
- You are open to changing the drain or valve location.
- You are updating a bathroom you plan to keep for years.
What Affects the Price
Costs depend on how much demolition is needed, the condition of the floor and walls, drain and valve changes, the type of shower you choose, and the finishing details. Hidden damage found during demolition is the most common reason a project's scope changes. Pricing to remove tub and install shower depends on the project, so ask for a written quote that explains what is included.
